EMax™ for Entegra

EMax™ Total Engine Management System

The EMax™ Engine Monitoring system for the Entegra EX5000 includes a dedicated engine page with a handy graphical fuel totalizer, a lean assist mode, and a percent power display, which take the guess work out of fuel and power management. EMax also monitors fuel flow and computes nautical miles per gallon, fuel remaining, fuel to waypoint, and fuel to destination. Temperatures, pressures, RPM, fuel flow, OAT, and electrical bus voltages are also monitored and displayed. Regardless of if you aircraft is a single engine piston, piston twin, single turbine or multi-engine turbine, the EMax™ Engine Monitoring system is the most complete and intuitive engine management system available on a general aviation integrated flight deck.

The EX5000 offers a dedicated engine display page for clear and easy monitoring of engine functions. The dedicated engine page is very useful during engine startup, taxi, take-off and pattern work. For enroute, approach and landing phases of flight, critical engine data is displayed on the top left screen of the EXP5000 PFD and in the engine data-bocks on the top left corner of the moving map page. If an engine problem develops, an alert is clearly displayed on the message bar and with a simple twist the pilot can open the EMax™ engine page and quickly identity the problem.

Fuel Totalizer

Fuel Totalizer

The initial fuel page appears during startup and allows you to enter the total fuel on board. It includes quick-setting "Full Fuel" and "Fuel to Tabs" buttons, or you can dial in the number of gallons added.

The integrated fuel totalizer monitors fuel flow and computes nautical miles per gallon, fuel remaining, fuel-to-waypoint, and fuel-to-destination. All cylinder head (CHT) and exhaust gas temperatures (EGT), RPM, manifold pressure, oil temperature, oil pressure, fuel flow, outside air temperature (OAT), and electrical bus voltages are also monitored and displayed.

Map Page Data Blocks

Map Page Data Blocks

The Entegra EX5000 displays engine and fuel data in data blocks on the full-screen moving map display. In the event of an exceedence, each out-of-limit parameter is highlighted on the screen for immediate attention. The engine monitor also includes data capture capability, providing full-time recording of critical engine performance parameters.

Engine Management Display

Engine Management Display

The EMax™ engine monitoring system displays engine function gauges in an easy to read layout for single or twin, piston or turbine engines. Engine function gauges include for piston engines:

  • Manifold Pressure Gauge indicates the current engine intake manifold pressure
  • RPM Gauge displays current engine speed in revolutions per minute
  • Power gauge calculates and displays the percent horsepower based on an Avidyne proprietary algorithm utilizing the measured engine parameters. The percent power is displayed in the Engine Page of the EX5000 and on the EXP5000 PFD (Primary Engine Display) in many of our OEM aircraft.
  • Engine oil temperature and oil pressure gauges

For Turbine engines:

  • Torque displays engine torque in foot-pounds
  • Inlet turbine temp (ITT) indicates the turbine inlet temperature for each engine in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Propeller RPM (Np) indicates the current propeller speed
  • Turbine RPM (Ng) indicates the current turbine speed as a percentage
  • Engine Oil temp and Oil pressure

Electrical System Display

The EMax™ engine page also displays the state of the aircrafts electrical system including main bus voltage, alternator amperage and battery condition including discharge rate to help shed electrical load if an alternator failure occurs.

Temperature Monitoring

Temperature Monitoring

EGT and CHT

Exhaust Gas Temperature and Cylinder Head Temperature display cylinder head and exhaust gas temperatures for each cylinder in degrees Fahrenheit. The EMax™ Engine Monitor makes it easy to determine and set the ideal ratio of fuel to air that result in complete combustion. Measuring the temperature of the exhaust gas is the most effective way to achieve optimal fuel/air mixture. As you lean the mixture, the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) rises as excess fuel is decreased and combustion is more complete. By measuring the EGT of all cylinders simultaneously, you can determine the first cylinder to peak.

True Lean Assist Mode

EMax™ provides an easy-to-use "Lean Assist" Mode. After cruise power has been established, press the "Lean Acquire" line-select button on the Engine Page. As you begin to lean the mixture, the EX5000 Engine Monitor is continually checking all cylinders for the first cylinder to achieve peak EGT. "PEAK EGT" will be annunciated when the first cylinder to peak is detected. The display will also change the cylinder column color from green to blue and show peak EGT. Unlike most glass flight deck displays, the Entegra EMax™ Engine Monitoring system gives the pilot a clear indication of when “Best Power” or “Best Economy” has been properly set resulting in significant fuel savings and cooler engine temperatures.

Fuel Management Display

Fuel usage including fuel flow, fuel used fuel remaining, time remaining and fuel economy. The EMax™ Engine Page allows the pilot to simultaneously view peak EGT and minimum fuel flow. There will be an optimum EGT enrichment vs. fuel flow for your engine, giving maximum range and power.

Outside air temperature and Density Altitude are also displayed on some EMax™ engine pages. Outside air temperature displays the ambient air temperature in either degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. Density Altitude is derived from the outside air temperature and pressure altitude.

Fuel Management along your flight

The EMax™ fuel totalizer computes your fuel remaining at each waypoint along your route of flight and displays it on the Trip Page, along with waypoint distances, DTK, ETE, ETA, and reporting METAR stations.

Trend Monitoring and Data Capture Log

EMax™ includes data capture capability, providing full-time recording of critical engine performance parameters. The EX5000 MFD will log up to 100 hours of recorded data, which can be downloaded via a bezel-accessible USB data port in a standard spreadsheet format for easy analysis. The enables owners to record engine data and analyze it for trends and signs of potential problems.

Data Log Downloading Procedures and Examples

When downloading data from your EX5000 MFD you may use a Zip Drive Data Loader or if you have Entegra Release 6 or newer a USB Flash Memory Drive may be used.

Zip Drive

Procedure to download the stored engine data log files:

  1. Turn power OFF to the EX5000 MFD
  2. If using the Zip Drive Data Loader, install compatible blank disk into the Data Loader drive
  3. Connect the USB Flash Drive or one end of the interconnect cable to the Data Loader and the other end to the EX5000 MFD data port on the front panel.
  4. Apply power to the EX5000 MFD by turning ON the avionics master switch.
  5. The Data Log Transfer screen is displayed.
  6. Press the “Proceed” button. Do not turn off the EX5000 MFD or disconnect the interconnect cable during a data transfer.
  7. The data transfer is complete when disk is automatically ejected from the Data Loader drive and the “Press Any Bezel Key” message is displayed.
  8. Remove the Data Loader or USB Flash Drive and interconnect cable and store in a safe place. The disk will contain up to 100 hours of engine data in two file formats, an ASCII text file which can be opened in most spreadsheet programs (.txt), and a Jeppesen Track file (.log) which is compatible with Jeppesen FliteStar.

Viewing EMax Engine Log Data with Excel

Using a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel, you can view your entire engine data log data and even plot the data in graphical format.
